The biggest surprise is that I am back in Arlington. After graduating W-L, I went to UNC-CH where I earned a Journalism degree in 1969. After a year in law school at UNC (I really liked basketball), I was drafted, served and upon discharge returned with my wife (whom I met while in the service) to school. Well, not really. She was in the last year of her masters at St. Louis U and her credits wouldn't fully transfer. So on $7000 plus the GI bill, we footed two tuitions, separate living and the commute through her graduation (she skipped the ceremony to come to Chapel Hill). We had a deal, the first person to find a job (among five east coast cities - Atlanta, DC, Philadelphia, NY and Boston - she was a small town girl and wanted the big-city experience) was where we'd live (for five years). Sharon did - in Fairfax. Only make it back to North Carolina for games and beach (still have a place at Emerald Isle).
We lived on Capitol Hill until 1982 when our second daughter was born and after talking with a bunch of people about options (schools, taxes, construction costs), we moved and the house was in North Arlington. Who knew?
Both daughters essentially grew up here and still return although the oldest daughter - Lauren - is married to a Brit. She met him on her semester in England in college and they continued the relationship across the pond, all the way through the immigration process in the US which he completed in 2012. She's an actress (Les Miz - at 10) but smart enough to get a day job - in banking. Our younger daughter, now in LA was a nurse at Childrens in DC after school and working in Miami. She's a confirmed Hurricane who'd coxed her Yorktown HS crew to the school's only national crew championship.
My own story - law school and a series of trade groups in DC focusing on banking. After playing the large firm game - I joined a colleague last year - to focus on representing the nation's credit unions. We travel, teach and work through all sorts of legal issues for credit unions from Maine to Florida, Maryland to California. I am even an assistant State's Attorney in Idaho. Early in 2015 we were successful in chartering a new credit union serving the NYPD, New York's Finest. It is going very well and presents lots of interesting opportunities to work with some truly great people.
My youngest daughter chose October 3rd as the date to get married. I haven't figured out how to be in two places at once even though my major contribution to the ceremony is my ever practiced ability to sign checks.
Best to all the great friends and graduates - Bruce
